The National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC) is creating a new way to visit its Quantico, Virginia facility -- providing online visitors a true-to-life experience and access to the growing collection of historical artifacts. This online experience will closely resemble an actual museum encounter through high quality video, three-dimensional models, docent stories about selected artifacts and virtual reality technology.
Harnessing the latest in web based digital asset management, Flash powered web sites and panoramic VR technology, the NMMC is exploiting the full capabilities of today’s new media. Visitors can browse through the museum’s galleries at their own pace, zooming in on objects to examine minute details or zooming out for a more navigable panoramic view of the exhibition.
High-resolution imagery combined with Deep Zoom™ technology provides the user with an almost limit-less zoom-in capability of many artifacts. Several historical artifacts have been recreated in three-dimensional digital modeling form, giving virtual visitors the ability to rotate 360º around the object.
One of the most exciting aspects of the 3D Interactive Museum is the inclusion of historical stories told by the actual Museum docents.
IDAM™ – The Digital Asset Management system is used to maintain the digital historical imagery and artifact content for the 3D Interactive Museum tour.
